Recommendations from a travel expert
Why is Peru 10 days a good itinerary to visit several destinations in the country?
Peru 10 days allows you to visit Lima, Paracas, Huacachina, Arequipa, the Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain within a progressive route through the coast and the Andes.
Its main advantage is that it combines nature, archaeology, culture and very different landscapes without concentrating the entire trip only in Cusco.
What are the advantages of doing Peru 10 days instead of visiting only Cusco and Machu Picchu?
Doing Peru 10 days allows you to get a more diverse view of the country, because in addition to Cusco and Machu Picchu it includes the Huacachina desert, the Ballestas Islands, Arequipa, the Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca. This helps you understand how the landscapes, customs and geography change between the coast and different regions of the Andes.
What is the main disadvantage of traveling through Peru in 10 days?
The main disadvantage of Peru 10 days is the pace of the trip, since traveling through so many destinations in a short time involves several road transfers, one domestic flight and frequent changes of accommodation.

Travel Expert Recommendations
What type of clothing should I wear for the Huacachina Full-Day Tour?
Wear lightweight and comfortable clothing suitable for the desert heat. White, black, and red clothing creates a striking contrast against the dunes in photographs.
Bring a jacket for the return journey to Lima, as temperatures become cooler at night.
Will I be able to see the sunset on the Huacachina Full-Day Tour?
No. Due to the return schedule to Lima, this one-day Huacachina tour does not coincide with sunset in the dunes.
If watching the sunset from the dunes is important to you, we recommend choosing one of our 2-day tours with an overnight stay in Ica.

10:15 AM – Photos with Alpacas and Rainbow Mountain
It's time to capture unforgettable memories! We recommend bringing some cash in Peruvian Soles (PEN), as local community members dressed in traditional Andean clothing often pose with their alpacas for souvenir photos.
12:00 PM – Return to the Transportation
We'll hike back down to our vehicle and begin the return journey toward Cusco.
2:30 PM – Depart from the Restaurant
After lunch, we'll board our transportation for the approximately 2 hour drive back to Cusco. Take this time to relax, edit your photos, or enjoy a well deserved nap.

What places are visited on a Peru 10 days tour?
The Peru 10 days itinerary allows you to visit some of the most representative destinations in the south of the country: Lima, Huacachina, Arequipa, the Colca Canyon, Puno, Uros and Taquile, Cusco, Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain. The route combines coast, desert, historic cities, highlands and high-mountain landscapes, using flights and ground transportation to connect the different regions.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: On this type of circuit, it is advisable to prepare a small backpack for daily use. During some overland journeys your main luggage will be stored, and it is more practical to carry documents, warm clothing, water and sun protection with you.
📍 Did you know? In ten days, the route goes from places located practically at sea level to areas above 5,000 meters of altitude.
What is the best time to do Peru 10 days?
The best time to do Peru 10 days depends on the conditions you prefer, although between April and September there is usually less rain in the Andes. From October to March, the probability of rainfall increases, especially in Cusco and the mountain areas. Huacachina has drier conditions during much of the year, so the climatic change between regions can be considerable within the same trip.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Even if you travel between June and August, bring a light waterproof layer. In Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain, weather changes can occur even if Cusco has started the day completely clear.
📍 Did you know? The driest months in the Andes also coincide with some of the coldest nights of the year, especially in high-altitude areas such as Colca and Puno.
Do I need to acclimatize to the altitude during Peru 10 days?
Yes. During Peru 10 days it is important to adapt progressively because the route includes destinations located at different altitudes, such as Arequipa, the Colca Canyon, Puno, Cusco and finally Rainbow Mountain. The sequence of the itinerary allows you to gradually approach higher areas, but each person responds differently. Resting, staying hydrated and avoiding unnecessary effort during the first days at altitude makes adaptation easier.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: In Arequipa and Puno avoid scheduling additional physical activities during your free time. These are useful days for your body to adapt before reaching the higher-altitude excursions.
📍 Did you know? Puno is located at around 3,800 meters above sea level and Vinicunca exceeds 5,000 meters, so both days feel very different physically.
Is Peru 10 days a physically demanding trip?
Peru 10 days has a moderate level of difficulty for most of the route, but the Rainbow Mountain day requires considerably more effort because of the altitude. The visits to Huacachina, Arequipa, Colca, Titicaca, Cusco and Machu Picchu combine walks, cultural visits and transfers. It is not necessary to be an athlete, although it is advisable to have a basic level of physical fitness and be prepared to walk on uneven terrain and stairs.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Do not use Machu Picchu as a test to decide whether you will be able to hike Vinicunca. The difference in altitude is considerable and a person who walks comfortably in Machu Picchu may feel much more effort at Rainbow Mountain.
📍 Did you know? At higher altitudes, oxygen availability decreases, so a short walk can feel more demanding than a longer distance covered at sea level.
How much time is spent traveling by road during Peru 10 days?
In Peru 10 days there are several days of ground transportation because the route connects different regions of southern Peru. Among the most important journeys are Lima–Huacachina, Arequipa–Colca Canyon, Colca–Puno and Puno–Cusco via the Route of the Sun. Some transfers take several hours, although they allow you to cross deserts, valleys, volcanic areas and highland landscapes that are part of the journey.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: For Colca–Puno and Puno–Cusco, carry water, a light jacket and any personal medication inside your backpack and not in your main suitcase. During certain stops, the luggage remains stored in the vehicle.
📍 Did you know? The Route of the Sun between Puno and Cusco turns a long transfer into a sightseeing day thanks to cultural and archaeological stops made along the way.
How is Machu Picchu visited during Peru 10 days?
During Peru 10 days, Machu Picchu is visited on a full-day excursion from Cusco that combines ground transportation and a train journey to the Machu Picchu Pueblo area. Once at the archaeological sanctuary, the visit follows the route corresponding to the assigned circuit, accompanied by a guide. At the end of the visit, the return to Cusco begins, making it one of the most logistically important days of the program.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Do not plan important activities for the evening after Machu Picchu. Return times depend on the combination of train and ground transportation, and it is preferable to keep some flexibility in case of any operational variation.
📍 Did you know? Machu Picchu operates with established visitor circuits, so the route inside the citadel depends on the type of entrance ticket available at the time of booking.
What clothing should I bring for Peru 10 days?
For Peru 10 days it is advisable to bring layered clothing because the itinerary crosses very different climates. Include light clothing for Lima, Huacachina; a warm jacket for Colca, Puno and Cusco; a light rain jacket; comfortable pants; footwear with good grip; a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. In high-altitude areas, mornings can be cold even though solar radiation can be intense during the day.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Do not bring only one very thick jacket. Several thin layers work better because they allow you to adapt quickly to temperature changes between buses, walks, trains and outdoor visits.
📍 Did you know? In the Andes, the temperature difference between morning, midday and night can be considerable even during the dry season.
How far in advance should I book Peru 10 days?
It is recommended to book Peru 10 days approximately 3 to 4 months in advance, especially if you will travel during high season or have inflexible dates. The program requires coordinating several consecutive services and some, such as entrance to Machu Picchu and certain train schedules, have limited availability. Booking in advance makes it easier to organize the itinerary correctly without having to modify important days due to lack of availability.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: First confirm the availability of Machu Picchu before purchasing separate non-changeable domestic or international flights. The entrance time can determine the train and, subsequently, the complete logistics of that day.
📍 Did you know? Machu Picchu availability is managed by date, circuit and time, so finding tickets for a specific day does not necessarily mean that all circuits are still available.
Does Peru 10 days include free time to explore the cities on your own?
Yes. The Peru 10 days itinerary combines organized excursions with some free time, especially upon arrival in Lima, during the afternoon in Arequipa and in the final hours in Cusco before the transfer to the airport. These moments allow you to rest, walk through central areas, try local cuisine or do simple activities without adding another full excursion to an itinerary that already includes several transfers and high-altitude days.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: In Arequipa, use the free afternoon to walk calmly through the historic center instead of taking a demanding excursion. The next day the ascent toward Colca begins, so it is advisable to arrive well rested.
📍 Did you know? The historic center of Arequipa is known for its sillar constructions, a light-colored volcanic stone that explains its traditional nickname, the “White City”.
Is it advisable to do Rainbow Mountain at the end of Peru 10 days?
Yes. Doing Rainbow Mountain toward the end of Peru 10 days makes sense because by then the traveler will already have passed through Arequipa, the Colca Canyon, Puno and Cusco, accumulating several days of progressive exposure to altitude. This does not eliminate the possibility of experiencing altitude sickness, but it is usually more reasonable than visiting Vinicunca immediately after arriving from a city located at sea level.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: The night before, avoid alcohol, very heavy meals and going to bed late. The departure to Vinicunca starts early and prior rest greatly influences how the hike feels above 5,000 meters.
📍 Did you know? Vinicunca reaches approximately 5,036 meters above sea level, making it the highest point of this itinerary through Peru.
