Have questions?
We got answers
Where is Pallay Punchu located?
Pallay Punchu is located in the department of Cusco, within the province of Canas, south of Cusco city, near Lake Langui.
What is the altitude of Pallay Punchu?
The new Rainbow Mountain, Pallay Punchu, reaches an altitude of approximately 4,790 meters (15,715 feet) above sea level.
Is Pallay Punchu worth visiting?
Absolutely, especially if you are looking for things to do in Cusco that are different from the traditional, tourist crowded activities.
Which is better Pallay Punchu or Vinicunca?
It depends Pallay Punchu is ideal for travelers looking for a more authentic, off the beaten-path experience, while Vinicunca is world-renowned for its scenic beauty though that has also made it incredibly crowded today.
Are horses available at Pallay Punchu?
No, you definitely have to walk the 2 km round trip. It’s not difficult, and I’m telling you this from my own experience guiding tourists it’s all about hiking up at a relaxed pace and taking breaks along the way.
How long is the hike?
Around 1 hour round trip; if we add time for rests and photos, it takes about 2 hours in total.
When is the best season to visit?
Without a doubt, the dry season. However, considering the location and based on my experience, I highly recommend visiting between May and December.
Does Pallay Punchu have snow?
Not the entire area, but the surrounding mountains definitely have snow, which makes the landscape stand out even more.
Can you fly a drone at Pallay Punchu?
Yes. As of mid 2026, there are no restrictions on flying drones in the area. If you have one, I highly recommend bringing it to capture some spectacular photos and videos. Just make sure to fly carefully they don’t call Pallay Punchu ‘the sharp mountain’ for nothing.
Which is better sunrise or sunset?
Sunset, because the sunlight is more stable and lasts much longer. In contrast, sunrise happens very quickly, and then the sun gets too intense for photos.
Is it very crowded?
No, it’s not. Pallay Punchu is a destination that we at GET IN PERU have been promoting since 2023. Even now, in 2026, it is just starting to become known among foreign tourists, which is why we have recently launched daily group departures.
How much is the entrance fee?
The entrance fee is 15 soles for foreigners and 10 soles for Peruvian citizens. Please note that it is cash only.
Do I need to acclimatize?
Absolutely We provide everything from breakfast to a buffet lunch, so you can just sit back and enjoy. No extra fees, no hidden costs.
Is it suitable for children?
Absolutely, yes Even 2 year-old toddlers can go, since the altitude isn’t as high as Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) and the effort required is minimal. Just make sure to dress your little one warmly, as freezing winds can blow through intermittently.
What kind of clothes should I bring?
I recommend dressing in layers, like an onion, and always carrying a small backpack so you can take clothes off if you start feeling hot.
