VISIT: Chavin archaeological site

We’ll begin our journey to Chavín de Huántar between 7:00 and 7:30 A.M., picking you up from your hotel in Huaraz in our tourist transportation. Before departure, we’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast to start the day full of energy. We’ll leave around 8:00 A.M. heading south of the city.

Along the route, we’ll pass through the city of Recuay, where the pre-Inca culture of the same name once flourished. We’ll then continue to Cátac, a small town located beside the Santa River and known for its livestock activity. From there, we’ll take a detour into the Callejón de Conchucos, heading toward our first stop: the Querococha Lagoon (4,200 m / 13,780 ft), where we’ll enjoy stunning views of the mountains, ichu grass, and the tranquil lagoon.

Next, we’ll ascend to cross the Cahuish Tunnel, a passage over one kilometer long that connects the Santa Valley with the Conchucos Valley. After roughly three hours of travel in total, we’ll reach our main destination: the Archaeological Complex of Chavín de Huántar — one of Peru’s most iconic pre-Inca sites.

Here, we’ll explore the Old Temple, New Temple, the main square, and the famous stone-carved heads (“Cabezas Clavas”) that once guarded the temple. Our professional guide will explain the deep symbolism and cultural importance of this ancient ceremonial center.

After the visit, we’ll enjoy an included lunch and visit the National Museum of Chavín, where you’ll find original artifacts, sculptures, and the remarkable Lanzón de Chavín, one of the civilization’s most important religious icons.

Finally, we’ll begin our return to Huaraz, arriving around 6:00 P.M.
