Everything You Need to Know
Before You Travel

Yes. The Palcoyo 3 Rainbow Mountains Tour is an excellent option for travelers who want to experience a rainbow mountain with a shorter and less demanding hike than Vinicunca. During the excursion, you’ll hike approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) round trip while enjoying the Three Rainbow Mountains, the Stone Forest, and spectacular Andean landscapes between 4,800 and 4,960 m (15,748–16,273 ft) above sea level.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: If you’re looking for a more relaxed experience with less physical effort, Palcoyo is one of the best full-day tours from Cusco.

📍 Did You Know? Palcoyo is known as the Three Rainbow Mountains because it offers panoramic views of several colorful mountains from a single scenic trail.

The Palcoyo 3 Rainbow Mountains Tour includes hotel pickup in Cusco, modern tourist transportation, a buffet breakfast, buffet lunch, a professional mountain guide, entrance fees, oxygen, a first aid kit, and assistance throughout the entire excursion. You’ll also have the opportunity to make an optional stop at the Colonial Bridge of Checacupe.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: Before booking, make sure your tour operator includes entrance fees, meals, and oxygen to avoid additional expenses during the trip.

📍 Did You Know? GET IN PERU operates its tours with authorized transportation and experienced staff to provide a safe, well-organized travel experience.

Palcoyo is located in the Canchis Province, south of the Cusco region, within the Ausangate Mountain Range. Its viewpoints sit between 4,800 and 4,960 m (15,748–16,273 ft) above sea level, offering some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Peruvian Andes.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: Bring your camera or make sure your phone is fully charged, as Palcoyo offers some of the best photography opportunities in the Andean highlands.

📍 Did You Know? In addition to the Rainbow Mountains, you’ll also have the chance to visit the famous Palcoyo Stone Forest during the hike.

The hike is considered easy to moderate. The total distance is approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) round trip and usually takes about two hours, including breaks and time for photos.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: Walk at your own pace and take short breaks to help your body adjust to the altitude.

📍 Did You Know? Many travelers choose Palcoyo because it allows them to enjoy a rainbow mountain experience without a long or strenuous hike.

The main difference is the level of physical effort required. While Vinicunca involves a longer and more challenging hike, the Palcoyo 3 Rainbow Mountains Tour offers a shorter, less crowded trail with panoramic views of three rainbow mountains and the impressive Stone Forest.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: If you’re traveling with older adults, children, or simply prefer an easier hike, Palcoyo is usually the better choice.

📍 Did You Know? Although both destinations feature similar colorful mountain formations, Palcoyo receives fewer visitors throughout most of the year.

The best time to visit is from April to October, when sunny days are more common and you have a greater chance of enjoying clear panoramic views. However, the tour operates year round, depending on weather conditions.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: Book in advance if you’re planning to visit between June and August, as this is the busiest travel season in Cusco.

📍 Did You Know? After periods of rain, the mineral colors of Palcoyo often appear even more vibrant.

Yes. It is recommended to spend one to two days in Cusco before taking the tour to help your body adjust to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: During your first days in Cusco, avoid strenuous activities, stay well hydrated, and eat light meals.

📍 Did You Know? The Palcoyo hike reaches nearly 5,000 m (16,404 ft) above sea level, so proper acclimatization can greatly improve your overall experience.

It is recommended to wear layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, hiking shoes, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and to bring water and a few snacks for the hike.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: Weather conditions in the Andes can change quickly, so it’s always a good idea to bring a windproof jacket, even on sunny days.

📍 Did You Know? Solar radiation at Palcoyo’s altitude is much stronger than in the city of Cusco.

Yes. Many itineraries include an optional stop at the Colonial Bridge of Checacupe, one of the most iconic historical landmarks in southern Cusco. Admission is optional and requires an additional fee.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: Bring cash in Peruvian Soles (PEN) if you plan to visit the bridge, as the entrance fee is paid directly on-site.

📍 Did You Know? Checacupe is home to bridges built during different periods of Peruvian history, ranging from the Inca era to the present day.

The Palcoyo 3 Rainbow Mountains Tour is a full-day excursion. It begins with hotel pickup in Cusco at around 4:30 a.m. and ends at approximately 5:00 p.m. During the tour, you’ll enjoy tourist transportation, a buffet breakfast, a hike to the Three Rainbow Mountains, a buffet lunch, and transportation back to the city.

💡 GET IN PERU Tip: Since this is a full-day tour, we recommend getting a good night’s sleep beforehand and bringing a light backpack with water, sunscreen, and warm clothing.

📍 Did You Know? The hike at Palcoyo takes approximately 2 hours round trip, including time to rest and take photos, making it one of the most accessible ways to experience a rainbow mountain in Cusco.
