Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain was discovered recently and is the best alternative to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, especially if you have breathing issues or don’t enjoy long hikes but still want to see colorful hills—this is the perfect choice.
The tour begins with pick-up from your hotel between 4:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. We’ll travel for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to Cusipata, where you’ll enjoy a traditional Andean breakfast to start your day full of energy.
We then continue for 20 more minutes by vehicle to Checacupe, a charming village where you’ll admire three historical bridges: one Inca, one Colonial, and one Republican. After that, we pass through Combapata and begin ascending along the left bank of the Salka River.
After a scenic 1 hour and 40-minute ride, we arrive at Wallata Q’asa, located at 4800 meters above sea level, the starting point of our hike. From here, you’ll see the majestic Warsaqyani Mountain, marking the beginning of our walking adventure.
We’ll hike for approximately 40 minutes until we reach the colorful hill of Q’alle Q’alle, a hidden gem of the region. Then, we continue to the impressive Stone Forest “Yuraq Qaqa,” located at 4960 meters above sea level.
The total walking distance is about 3 kilometers, including the short ascent to the Stone Forest. After exploring and taking a well-deserved break with free time for photos, we’ll walk back to the starting point.
We’ll then return to Cusipata to enjoy a delicious local lunch. Finally, we’ll head back to Cusco, arriving at around 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
