Recommendations from a Travel Expert

What clothing should I bring for the 4 day, 3 night Tambopata Tour?

Bring lightweight, breathable, quick-drying clothing for the daytime, but include long pants and long-sleeved shirts for jungle hikes.

It is also advisable to bring a lightweight waterproof jacket, especially in case of sudden changes in the weather.

Is it advisable to wear regular sneakers for hiking in Tambopata?

It is not the most advisable option. In the jungle, you may encounter wet trails, mud, and slippery surfaces, so it is preferable to wear closed toe footwear with good traction.

Bringing extra socks is also practical in case your footwear gets wet during an excursion.

You will also visit:

The artificial turtle beaches, where nests are protected until the turtles are released (especially from July to November).
The observation tower, offering spectacular panoramic views of the river and rainforest, ideal for taking your best photos.
After enjoying nature and an unforgettable sunset, we will hike back to the lodge (approx. 2 hours).

Recommendations from a Travel Expert

Is it worth bringing binoculars on the 4 day, 3 night Tambopata Tour?

Yes. Although they are not essential, binoculars can greatly enhance the experience during hikes and from the observation tower, especially for spotting birds and other animals among the trees or at a distance.

Is it necessary to bring a flashlight for the night walk in Tambopata?

Yes, it is recommended to bring a small flashlight or headlamp to move more comfortably along the trails after dark.

A headlamp is especially practical because it keeps your hands free while you walk and observe nocturnal wildlife with your guide.

Is it advisable to wear sandals during the trek and night walk in Tambopata?

It is not the most advisable option. During this day, you will explore jungle trails both during the day and at night, so comfortable, closed-toe footwear with good traction will be a better option for the hikes.

4:30 a.m. - After a Cup of Coffee

Very early in the morning, we will begin our excursion to Lake Sandoval, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. Before departing, we will enjoy a cup of hot coffee and receive a packed breakfast.

5:00 a.m. - Boarding the Boat

We will board a boat and travel along the Madre de Dios River for approximately 1 hour, navigating as the sun rises over the rainforest. This schedule is ideal because:

There are greater chances of spotting wildlife. It allows us to avoid the intense heat that begins after 10:00 A.M., especially during the paddleboat portion of the excursion.

6:00 a.m. - Start of the 3 km Trek

We will begin a 3 km hike through the forest until we reach the majestic Lake Sandoval. Along the way, we may observe squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, blue and yellow macaws, birds, and tropical butterflies.

Once at the lake, we will board a quiet paddleboat to explore this beautiful body of water surrounded by pristine rainforest, home to black caimans and the endangered giant river otter. This experience lasts approximately 5 hours, including a stop along the shore to enjoy a snack surrounded by nature.

7:00 a.m. - Arrival at Lake Sandoval

We will arrive at the impressive Lake Sandoval, surrounded by lush Amazon rainforest.

Here, we will board a paddleboat and navigate quietly across its waters, enjoying the scenery while searching for wildlife such as monkeys, tropical birds, caimans, and, with a little luck, giant river otters.

During the excursion, we will have time to observe nature, take photographs, and enjoy the tranquility of the lake before beginning our journey back through the forest.

11:00 a.m. - Start of the 3 km Hike Back

We will begin our return to the lodge, hiking another 3 km before traveling downstream by boat. Back at the lodge, you will have free time to freshen up and rest before an Amazonian lunch.

1:00 p.m. - Amazonian Lunch

Back at the lodge, we will enjoy a delicious Amazonian lunch prepared with flavors and ingredients from the region.

Afterward, you will have free time to freshen up, relax in the common areas, or rest in your bungalow before continuing with the afternoon activities.

4:00 p.m. - Sunset Cruise on the Madre de Dios River

In the afternoon, we will enjoy a sunset cruise along the Madre de Dios River.

During the journey, we may observe turtles, monkeys, herons, and riverside birds. At a special moment, we will turn off the boat's engine and allow the current to carry us gently along as we watch the sunset over the river.

During the dry season (July to October), we will stop at a natural beach to enjoy the sand and even take a refreshing swim.

5:30 p.m. - Return to the Lodge

We will return to the lodge to rest and enjoy some free time before dinner.

7:30 p.m. - Amazonian Dinner Accompanied by Tropical Cocktails

We will share an Amazonian dinner accompanied by tropical cocktails, ending the day with stories surrounded by the magic of the rainforest.

8:30 p.m. - End of the Tour at Your Lodge

After dinner, you will have the rest of the evening free to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Amazon.

You can rest in your bungalow and recharge for the new experiences awaiting us the following day.

Recommendations from a Travel Expert

Is it necessary to bring a hat and insect repellent for the Tambopata Tour?

Yes. A hat or cap will help protect you from the sun during boat rides and outdoor activities.

It is also advisable to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, and sunglasses to be better prepared for the excursions.

How can I protect my camera and phone from humidity in Tambopata?

Keep them in a waterproof bag or protective case inside your backpack. Humidity is constant in the Amazon, and unexpected rain can occur, so protecting your devices before starting the excursion is a good precaution.

Is it advisable to make noise to try to attract animals at Lake Sandoval?

No. Loud noises can disturb wildlife and reduce your chances of spotting animals. During the paddleboat excursion, enjoy the silence and let your guide help you locate animals among the vegetation.

Before Traveling

The 4 Day, 3 Night Tambopata Tour from Puerto Maldonado combines accommodation at an Amazon lodge, boat trips, jungle hikes, the Tambopata National Reserve, a canopy walk, a night walk, Lake Sandoval, and a sunset cruise along the Madre de Dios River.

The experience begins with pick-up in Puerto Maldonado and ends on the fourth day with the return journey by boat, followed by a transfer to the airport or bus terminal according to your departure time.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: If you are looking for your first experience in the Amazon, four days allow you to alternate between land and river activities without concentrating the entire visit into a single day.

🌿 Did you know…? The Tambopata National Reserve protects 274,690 hectares in Madre de Dios and aims to conserve its flora, fauna, and subtropical rainforest landscapes.

The 4 day, 3 night Tambopata itinerary begins with pick-up in Puerto Maldonado, a boat ride to the lodge, and an introductory jungle hike. The second day combines the ecological reserve, trekking, canopy walk, and night walk, while the third day is mainly dedicated to Lake Sandoval and a sunset cruise along the Madre de Dios River.

On the fourth day, after breakfast, you will return by boat to Puerto Maldonado, followed by your transfer to the airport or bus terminal.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: Bring a small backpack with only the items you will actually need during the excursions; leaving some of your belongings at the lodge will make the hikes more comfortable.

🛶 Did you know…? River transportation is an essential part of the Amazon experience: SERNANP states that the Sandoval area can be reached from Puerto Maldonado after approximately 30 minutes by boat followed by a 3 km hike.

In Tambopata, there is a chance to see monkeys, macaws, tropical birds, capybaras, caimans, and giant river otters, among many other species. However, since these are wild animals in their natural habitat, no specific wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.

Day and night hikes, boat trips, and the visit to Lake Sandoval allow you to explore different habitats and increase your chances of spotting wildlife.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: Walk quietly and follow your guide’s instructions; in the rainforest, you will often hear animals before you are able to see them.

🐒 Did you know…? SERNANP records around 600 bird species and 169 mammal species in Tambopata, in addition to amphibians, reptiles, fish, and butterflies.

Yes, Lake Sandoval is one of the main attractions for travelers visiting Tambopata from Puerto Maldonado, especially for those looking for Amazonian landscapes and opportunities to observe wildlife.

On the Get In Peru itinerary, the visit takes place on the third day and involves an early departure, a boat ride, and an approximately 3 km hike to reach the area, before returning to the lodge and enjoying the afternoon cruise.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: The excursion starts very early, so prepare your water, insect repellent, appropriate clothing, and everything else you will need the night before.

🦦 Did you know…? SERNANP considers Lake Sandoval one of the main tourist destinations in the Peruvian Amazon. Its surface covers approximately 127 hectares and is home to a permanent population of giant river otters.

SERNANP recommends May through October as the best season to visit the Tambopata National Reserve, while the rainy season is mainly concentrated between December and March.

This does not mean that the Amazon remains dry during these months: Tambopata has a hot and humid climate, so weather conditions can change throughout the trip.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: Regardless of the month, bring lightweight, quick-drying clothing, a waterproof jacket or poncho, and appropriate footwear for walking on wet terrain.

🌧️ Did you know…? The average annual temperature in Tambopata is around 26°C (79°F), although SERNANP records an approximate range between 10°C (50°F) and 38°C (100°F).

Staying at a lodge in Tambopata allows you to remain immersed in the Amazon environment throughout the 4 day, 3 night experience, reducing the need to return to Puerto Maldonado each day and making it easier to participate in activities scheduled for early in the morning.

On this itinerary, the lodge serves as your base for resting, having breakfast, lunch, and dinner between the different hikes and rainforest experiences.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: At night, keep your belongings organized and follow the lodge staff’s recommendations regarding insects, lighting, and moving around the facilities.

🌙 Did you know…? SERNANP recognizes ecotourism lodges among the services available to visitors in the Sandoval sector of the Tambopata National Reserve.

A night walk in Tambopata allows you to discover a different side of the rainforest, paying special attention to sounds, insects, amphibians, and other animals that become more active after dark.

On the Get In Peru tour, this experience is scheduled for the second day, after the daytime activities in the reserve and the canopy walk.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: Avoid wandering away from the group or shining your light directly at animals for too long; always follow your guide’s instructions during the walk.

🐸 Did you know…? Tambopata’s biodiversity is not limited to birds and mammals: SERNANP also records 103 species of amphibians and 103 species of reptiles in the reserve.

For a 4 day, 3 night Tambopata Tour, it is advisable to bring lightweight, breathable clothing, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, a waterproof jacket or poncho, appropriate hiking shoes or boots, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a cap or hat.

It is also recommended to bring a small backpack for excursions, a reusable water bottle, and protection for electronic devices against humidity.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: Avoid relying solely on shorts and short-sleeved clothing because of the heat; lightweight long pants and long sleeves can be more practical when hiking through vegetation.

🎒 Did you know…? Relative humidity in the Tambopata National Reserve can range between 80% and 100%, according to official information from SERNANP.

The sunset cruise on the Madre de Dios River offers a different experience from hiking, allowing you to admire the Amazonian landscape from the water as daylight begins to fade.

On the Get In Peru itinerary, the cruise takes place on the afternoon of the third day, after returning from Lake Sandoval and having lunch at the lodge, creating a day that combines exploring the reserve in the morning with a sunset river cruise.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: Keep your camera or phone protected from humidity and have it ready before the sun begins to set; the light changes quickly at these latitudes.

🌅 Did you know…? The Madre de Dios River plays a key role in providing access to the area’s tourist attractions: the Sandoval sector is located approximately half an hour by boat from Puerto Maldonado.

Yes, a 4 day, 3 night Tambopata Tour is worth it for travelers who want a more complete Amazon experience than a single-day visit from Puerto Maldonado, combining rainforest, river navigation, wildlife, hiking, and accommodation at a lodge.

The Get In Peru program adds variety by combining the Ecological Reserve, canopy walk, night walk, Lake Sandoval, and a sunset cruise on the Madre de Dios River, as well as transfers to and from Puerto Maldonado.

💡 Get In Peru Tip: If your main goal is to experience different environments of the Amazon rather than visiting just one specific attraction, four days offer a more varied experience than a quick excursion from Puerto Maldonado.

💎 Did you know…? Tambopata has three areas designated for nature tourism: Sandoval, Medio Tambopata, and Alto Tambopata, each with different routes and attractions.
