VISIT: Karajía Tombs Full Day
We begin our tour to the Karajía Sarcophagi between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m., picking you up directly from your hotel in Chachapoyas to start our adventure toward one of Peru’s most fascinating archaeological sites — Karajía, famous for its impressive anthropomorphic sarcophagi found nowhere else in the world.
At this mysterious funerary site, you’ll admire six imposing sarcophagi, each over two meters tall, made from a mix of cane and clay. Inside them, the ancient Chachapoya people placed their mummified dead in a ritual filled with spirituality and mystery.
Some sarcophagi are adorned with decorative headdresses, while others display reddish painted symbols on their outer walls — markings that still guard the secrets of this ancient culture.
During the journey, you’ll not only discover the rich history behind these archaeological marvels but also breathe in the pure air of the Andean-Amazonian highlands, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and cultural stories that bring this region to life.
Finally, we’ll return to Chachapoyas, arriving around 6:30 p.m.
