VISIT: Kuelap Citadel Full Day
We begin our tour to the imposing Pre-Inca Citadel of Kuélap at 7:30 a.m., with pickup from your hotel in Chachapoyas by van. The journey takes approximately 1 hour, following the scenic Utcubamba River Valley until reaching the town of Nuevo Tingo.
At around 9:00 a.m., we’ll arrive at the boarding station, where we’ll purchase the tickets to ride the cable cars. We’ll then transfer by vehicle to the cableway’s departure platform and enjoy a 20-minute panoramic ride to the tourist station at La Malca.
From there, we’ll start a 25-minute hike to reach the entrance of the Kuélap Citadel, the largest Pre-Inca structure in South America. During a 3-hour guided visit, we’ll explore its monumental stone walls, circular enclosures, and ancient history that continues to fascinate archaeologists worldwide.
After the visit, we’ll return to the tourist station, descend by cable car, and go back to Nuevo Tingo, where we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch.
In the afternoon, we’ll continue toward the Leymebamba community (about 1 hour and 30 minutes away) to visit the Community Museum of the Mallqui Center, home to more than 2,000 archaeological artifacts including ceramics, textiles, tools, quipus, and a remarkable collection of 219 mummies recovered from the Laguna de los Cóndores.
Finally, around 6:30 p.m., we’ll take our transportation back to the city of Chachapoyas.
