VISIT: San Mateo Glacier Full Day
We begin our expedition to Cumbre Mateo (5,150 m / 16,896 ft) at 3:00 A.M., picking you up from your hotel in Huaraz in a private tourist vehicle.
We’ll travel north through the Callejón de Huaylas until reaching the town of Carhuaz. From there, we’ll head east into the Ulta Valley, driving toward the Punta Olímpica Tunnel (4,736 m / 15,538 ft) — the highest vehicular tunnel in Peru. We’ll arrive around 6:00 A.M., where we’ll enjoy breakfast before beginning our ascent to Nevado Mateo.
After gearing up with technical mountaineering equipment (helmet, harness, crampons, ice axe, etc.), we’ll start a 1-hour approach hike over moraine terrain until we reach the glacier. Here, we’ll fully equip ourselves, perform a safety check with our mountain guide, and then continue roped up toward the summit.
The glacier climb takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once at the summit (5,150 m), you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the most iconic peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, including Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Ulta, Contrahierbas, and Chacraraju.
After a short break for photos, hydration, and a box lunch, we’ll begin our descent along the same route until we return to our vehicle. On the way back, we’ll stop briefly in Carhuaz, where you can enjoy the town’s famous artisanal fruit ice cream. We’ll arrive in Huaraz around 2:00 P.M.
