VISIT: Sillar Quarries
We begin our Sillar Quarries Tour at 8:00 a.m., picking you up from your hotel in Arequipa in private transportation.
Our journey starts with a brief stop at the main square of Cayma district, where you’ll enjoy the traditional charm of this neighborhood along with a panoramic view of Arequipa’s countryside.
We’ll then continue to the Añashuayco Quarry, a majestic canyon with towering volcanic cliffs where the famous sillar (white volcanic stone) is extracted. Here, you’ll witness the fascinating process of stone cutting and carving performed by the local master stonemasons, and learn how this material has been used to build some of Arequipa’s most iconic monuments, such as the Church of the Society of Jesus.
Next, we’ll head to Culebrillas Ravine, an enigmatic site surrounded by stunning natural rock formations. We’ll take a short hike through its narrow trails until we reach the apachetas, ancient stone mounds left as offerings by pre-Columbian travelers.
After exploring this cultural and natural wonder, we’ll return to Arequipa, arriving around 1:00 p.m., near the Plaza de Armas. From there, you can return to your hotel on your own or stay nearby to enjoy lunch in the historic center.
