Expert Travel Tips
Why choose the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour?
The 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour allows you to explore the valley at a more comfortable pace and make the most of its main attractions.
By spreading the tour over two days, you will have time to visit Andean villages, enjoy the hot springs, and reach the Condor Cross in the morning to admire the landscape and look for the flight of the condors.
What makes the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour special?
The 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour combines high-mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and one of the most anticipated moments of the trip: the visit to the Condor Cross, one of the best spots in the valley to observe Andean condors taking advantage of the morning thermal currents.
What is the main disadvantage of the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour?
The main disadvantage of the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour is that it requires dedicating two full days of your trip and spending several hours on the road. In addition, the route reaches high-altitude areas before descending toward the Colca Valley, something that some travelers may find more tiring than expected.

What does the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour include?
The 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour normally combines the journey from Arequipa with visits to viewpoints, traditional villages in the valley, hot springs, and the Condor Cross. The itinerary is divided into two days, with one night in the Colca area, allowing more time for the visits than on a one-day excursion.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Always check which services are included before booking, especially accommodation, meals, entrance fees, and access to the hot springs, as these may vary depending on the option booked.
🏔️ Did you know? The Colca Valley is located in the Arequipa region and brings together villages of pre-Inca origin, agricultural terraces, and landscapes shaped over centuries by its inhabitants.
Is the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour worth it?
Yes, the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour is worth it if you want to discover the valley’s main attractions without concentrating the entire journey into one long day. The two days allow you to combine Andean landscapes, traditional villages, hot springs, and a visit to the Condor Cross, as well as spend one night in the Colca Valley.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: If you have two days in Arequipa, this option is usually more manageable than visiting Colca on a full-day tour, mainly because of the long distances by road.
🏔️ Did you know? The route between Arequipa and Colca crosses areas above 4,000 meters in altitude before descending toward the valley.
What is the best time to take the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour?
The dry season, approximately from April to October, usually offers favorable conditions for taking the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour, with a lower chance of rain and generally clearer skies. The tour can also be done during other months, although rainfall is more frequent in the Andes between December and March.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Between June and August, bring warm clothing for the early hours of the day. Mornings can be quite cold, especially at viewpoints and higher-altitude areas.
🏔️ Did you know? During the rainy season, the mountains and agricultural terraces of the Colca Valley take on much greener tones.
How high does the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour reach?
The 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour reaches approximately 4,900 meters in altitude during the journey between Arequipa and the valley, especially when crossing the Patapampa area. Afterwards, the route descends toward towns such as Chivay, located at around 3,600 meters above sea level.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: In Patapampa, avoid running or making sudden movements even if you feel well. The stop is usually short, and your body may notice the altitude when walking quickly.
🏔️ Did you know? Patapampa is known as the Volcanoes Viewpoint because of the views it offers of several mountains and volcanoes in the Andes of Arequipa.
Can I experience altitude sickness during the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour?
Yes, it is possible to feel the effects of altitude during the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour, mainly during the first day, when the vehicle passes through areas above 4,000 meters. Some people may experience headaches, fatigue, or shortness of breath, although the response to altitude varies among travelers.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: If you arrive directly from a city located at sea level, try to spend at least one night in Arequipa beforehand and maintain a relaxed pace during the highest stops.
🏔️ Did you know? Arequipa is located at approximately 2,300 meters above sea level, considerably lower than the highest points along the route to Colca.
Where do you stay overnight during the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour?
During the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour, the night is normally spent within the Colca Valley, frequently in Chivay or another nearby town, depending on the itinerary and accommodation category booked. Staying in the valley makes it easier to start early on the second day to head toward the Condor Cross.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Prepare the clothes you will wear the next day the night before. Departures to the Condor Cross are usually early and temperatures are low in the morning.
🏔️ Did you know? Chivay is one of the main service centers in the Colca Valley and a common accommodation point for those exploring the area.
Can you see condors on the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour?
Yes, the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour normally includes a visit to the Condor Cross, one of the best-known places in the valley to observe the Andean condor in its natural environment. However, since they are wild animals, no schedule can guarantee a sighting.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: The early morning hours are important. Arrive at the viewpoint with patience and do not leave your spot after the first few minutes if the condors have not appeared yet; their activity depends on the conditions at the time.
🏔️ Did you know? Condors take advantage of rising air currents to gain altitude and move around while reducing the effort required during flight.
What clothes should I bring on the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour?
For the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour, it is advisable to bring layered clothing, a warm jacket, comfortable pants, closed-toe shoes, a hat or cap, sunglasses, and sun protection. Temperatures change considerably between the high-altitude areas of the road, the valley floor, and different times of the day.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Carry a light jacket in your daypack and not inside the luggage stored in the vehicle. You will need it especially during high-altitude stops and at the Condor Cross.
🏔️ Did you know? The strong solar radiation in the Andes can be felt even when the temperature is low or the sky is partially cloudy.
Does the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour require good physical condition?
The 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour does not usually require an advanced level of physical fitness, since most of the travel is done in tourist transportation and the usual visits include short walks. However, the altitude, temperature changes, and hours on the road can make the journey tiring for some travelers.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: Do not confuse this tour with the treks that descend into the canyon. If you are looking for a demanding hike, specifically confirm that you are booking a trek and not the conventional two-day tour.
🏔️ Did you know? There are different ways to explore Colca, from panoramic vehicle tours to multi-day hikes that descend into deeper areas of the canyon.
How far in advance should I book the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour?
It is recommended to book the 2-Day Colca Canyon Tour several days in advance, especially during the months of highest tourist demand, holidays, and festive dates. Booking in advance is particularly important when you are looking for a specific accommodation category to spend the night in the Colca Valley.
💡 Get In Peru Expert Tip: During high season, confirm your accommodation first before organizing subsequent activities in Arequipa. Room availability is usually more limited than transportation seats.
🏔️ Did you know? Colca is one of the best-known excursions from Arequipa, so demand increases during vacations, national holidays, and the main months of the dry season.
