Travel Expert Recommendations

Does the tour location help you see the stars more clearly?
Yes. The Uyuni night photography and stargazing tour takes place away from the main city lights, creating better conditions for observing and photographing the night sky.

Everything You Need to Know
Before You Travel
What Is the Uyuni Night Photography Tour Like?
The Uyuni Night Photography Tour is an approximately four-hour experience that combines photography on the Uyuni Salt Flats, sunset, a wine toast, and a nighttime photo session under the stars.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: Bring a few pose ideas before the tour begins. At night, there is less light, so having some references can help you make the most of each photography setting.
🌌 Did you know…? The Uyuni Salt Flats are especially attractive for night photography because their vast open horizon allows you to include stars, silhouettes, and reflections within the same composition.
Can You See the Stars During the Night Tour in Uyuni?
Yes, as long as weather conditions allow it. One of the main reasons to take a night tour on the Uyuni Salt Flats is to observe and photograph a sky with very little light pollution once you leave the city.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: Check the weather conditions on the day of your tour, but do not automatically rule out a night with some clouds: they can add depth and color to sunset photos.
✨ Did you know…? A moonless night can also make it easier to see faint stars and the Milky Way because there is less natural light illuminating the sky.
Can You Photograph the Milky Way at the Uyuni Salt Flats?
Yes, it is possible to photograph the Milky Way from the Uyuni Salt Flats, but its visibility depends on the date, time, lunar phase, cloud cover, and the position of the galaxy during the night.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: If photographing the Milky Way is the main goal of your trip, check the Moon phase and the approximate position of the galactic center for your travel date before booking.
🌌 Did you know…? The brightest part commonly seen in Milky Way photographs lies in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, toward the center of our galaxy.
What Is the Best Time of Year for a Night Photography Tour in Uyuni?
It depends on the type of photography you want to capture.
Between approximately December and March, rainfall can leave a thin layer of water on the salt flats and create the famous mirror effect, allowing you to take photos in which the sky is reflected on the ground.
During the drier season, approximately between May and November, the white surface and hexagonal salt patterns are more prominent, while the nights often offer interesting conditions for observing the sky.
Therefore, there is no single “best time”: the best season depends on the type of photography you are looking for.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: Choose the rainy season if you dream of reflections, and the dry season if you prefer the night sky, white salt surface, and greater freedom of movement for photography.
📸 Did you know…? Uyuni changes so much between the two seasons that nighttime photos can look as though they were taken in two completely different destinations.
Does the Uyuni Night Photography Tour Include the Mirror Effect?
The mirror effect occurs when a thin layer of water remains on the extremely flat surface of the Uyuni Salt Flats. It is more common during the rainy season and is usually more likely between late December and March.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: If your main goal is to capture reflection photos, ask about the current conditions of the salt flats a few days before your tour rather than relying only on the “mirror season.”
💧 Did you know…? The mirror effect does not require it to be raining during your visit; what matters is having enough accumulated water and little wind to maintain a reflective surface.
Does the Moon Affect Night Photography at the Uyuni Salt Flats?
Yes. The lunar phase can significantly change the result of night photography.
Around the new moon, the sky is darker, which is favorable for capturing faint stars and details of the Milky Way. A brighter moon, on the other hand, can provide natural light over the salt flats and people, but it may also reduce the contrast of fainter stars.
This means that a new moon and a full moon offer different types of photographs; one is not necessarily worse than the other.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: If your priority is photographing stars and the Milky Way, look for dates close to the new moon. For nighttime portraits with more ambient light, a brighter moon can also be interesting.
🌙 Did you know…? In astrophotography, knowing the moonrise and moonset times can be just as important as knowing its phase.
Do I Need a Professional Camera to Enjoy the Night Photography Tour?
No. You can enjoy the Uyuni night photography tour even if you are traveling with only your smartphone.
Phones with night mode or astrophotography mode can achieve very interesting results, especially when they remain completely still during the shot.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: Clean the lens before you start and avoid using digital zoom at night. If your phone has night mode, keep it as steady as possible while taking the photo.
📱 Did you know…? For a sharp night photo, keeping the camera still is often more important than having a high number of megapixels.
What Clothing Should I Bring for a Night Tour on the Uyuni Salt Flats?
For a night tour on the Uyuni Salt Flats, it is advisable to wear thermal clothing or dress in several layers, along with a warm jacket, long pants, thick socks, gloves, and a hat.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: Don’t dress warmly thinking only about walking; during the photo sessions, you may spend several minutes almost completely still, which is when the cold usually feels more intense.
🧤 Did you know…? For night photography, gloves that allow you to operate your phone or camera are especially useful because they prevent you from having to uncover your hands constantly.
What Happens If It Is Cloudy During the Night Photography Tour?
If the sky is partly cloudy, the tour can still offer excellent opportunities to photograph the sunset, reflections, silhouettes, and light painting.
Heavy cloud cover may reduce or temporarily prevent the visibility of stars and the Milky Way. For this reason, astronomical conditions should always be treated as natural phenomena rather than guaranteed elements of the itinerary.
Clouds can also move quickly across open spaces such as the salt flats, so conditions at the beginning of the tour may not necessarily be the same an hour later.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: Don’t measure the success of the tour only by the number of visible stars. The salt flats change constantly during sunset, and clouds can create some of the most dramatic skies for photography.
☁️ Did you know…? A small amount of cloud cover can add texture to a night photograph and, during the mirror effect, can also be visually reflected on the water.
Is the Uyuni Night Photography and Stargazing Tour Worth It?
Yes, especially for travelers who will already visit the salt flats during the day or who are looking for an experience focused on sunset, photography, and the night sky.
Get In Peru’s tour brings together three visually different moments in a single afternoon: a photo session in natural light, sunset with a wine toast, and nighttime photography with light painting and stars before returning to Uyuni.
In addition, by starting at 4:30 PM and finishing at approximately 8:30 PM, it allows you to experience the salt flats at night without dedicating an additional full day.
💡 Get In Peru Tip: If you are also taking a daytime tour of Uyuni, do not consider this experience repetitive. The light, colors, and photography change completely after sunset.
⭐ Did you know…? Lonely Planet highlights the nighttime experience in Uyuni for the opportunity to admire the stars and, when there is water on the salt flats, see their reflection on the surface.
